Education and Training

The stellar Dr. Jamie McGinness is a board certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs Micrographic surgeon. Dr. McGinness completed his residency in dermatology at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he also served as the chief resident.

Dr. McGinness went on to complete his fellowship training in Mohs Micrographic Surgery at the Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center in Leawood, KS. He also received advanced dermatopathology training at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, OH, as well as advanced Mohs and reconstructive surgical training with Dr. Tri Nguyen, a world renowned Mohs surgeon, in Houston, TX.

Expertise in Mohs Surgery

Since becoming a fellowship trained Mohs surgeon, Dr. McGinness has performed more than 3,000 surgeries using the Mohs method. For the last five years, he has been serving patients in the central Illinois area, and in fact, he is the only fellowship trained Mohs surgeon currently serving the Metro East Illinois St. Louis area.

The Mohs technique, considered the gold standard in skin cancer treatment, involves the surgical removal of skin cancer layer by layer.

Unlike more traditional skin cancer treatment methods that estimate the extent of the tissue to be treated, Mohs surgery examines 100 percent of the tumor margin. This enables Dr. McGinness to address only the necessary amount of tissue to ensure complete removal of the cancer. This high-precision approach minimizes the amount of healthy tissue removed and improves the health and cosmetic outcomes.
